Success & Results

We consider college enrollment our ultimate measure of success.

In 2009, Dr. Eric Bettinger and Dr. Anthony Antonio, both of Stanford University, initiated a comprehensive evaluation of direct outcomes for the Advising Corps.  Initial evaluation results find that on average, schools served by our program see an 8-12% percentage point increase in college-going rates versus control schools in the area.  Preliminary results show:

  • The Advising Corps has proven to be effective in both urban and rural markets.  In Providence, Rhode Island, NCAC treatment schools have shown a 14.4% increase in college-going compared to control schools in the area.  In rural North Carolina, a similar increase was found between treatment and control schools.
  • Upon the introduction of an adviser, Advising Corps partner high schools see an average increase of $1 million in additional scholarship dollars per school for their college-going students.
  • Surveys of partner high schools showed an overall increase in the number of college visits per student, attendance at college fairs, FAFSA completion, SAT/ACT registration and overall school morale.

Since the establishment of the Advising Corps in 2004, we project that approximately 12,000 additional students served by our program have enrolled in college who might previously not have done so.  Based on data which indicate that college graduates earn approximately $1 million more in the course of their lifetimes than non-college graduates, this incremental number of college students will enjoy increased lifetime earnings of roughly $12 billion.

Further, students report an overall increase in awareness regarding higher education and what specifically is required to attend college as a direct result of working with an adviser.  The Advising Corps provides a unique, much-needed and highly beneficial service to schools that lack the counseling resources and time to thoroughly promote college and work with students to gain admission.
